2009 Norfolk Race Series Ends with exciting MTB race
"Every time I started to catch you, I'd hit another tree." commented Richard Hake at the end of of the final race of the Norfolk XC Series, held Wednesday night, September 16 at Maskenthine Lake north of Stanton, NE. Hake was chasing, and would have easily passed, Jon Downey had it not been for some strategically-placed trees. Hake nearly took Downey up the last hill but settled for fourth behind Downey in the Men's B race. .
The real battle of the night was between family - the father and son duo of Duane and Kyle Blair. The elder Blair has long been one of the most respected riders in Nebraska for his power and endurance but was given a good run for the win by his son. Duane took off like a rabbit at the start getting good gap on the field right away and leaving Kyle to deal with some traffic to catch his father. Taking the first available opportunity, Kyle ripped passed other riders to chase Duane down.
It wasn't meant to be on this night though, as father bested son for the overall and the A Race win. Kyle took the B race win, with Matt Classen an easy second ahead of Downey. Hake crossed in a close fourth with Jerry Hoff rolling in fifth after his best race of the season. Tim Powell hammered to a second place in the A race behind Duane Blair.
