Norfolk XC Series June 23 Edition

A huge field of mountain bikers braved the heat and humidity for the second race in the Norfolk XC Series held June 23 at Maskenthine Lake north of Stanton. The twelve riders who signed up to race made this the largest XC race to date for the Tuesday night series. The heat and humidity took its toll on the entire field, with all riders suffering in the elements. The large field made for great racing however, more than making up for some slightly slower lap times overall.

The field lined up for the uphill start on the gravel road in a mass sprint for good position entering the singletrack. Once on the trail, the first half lap of the 1.5 lap race served to string out the field and set up the racing for the finish. Devin Bethune, first into the singletrack, crashed causing him to lose several positions. Duane Blair and Jim Weiland, despite being classified in different categories, raced head to head to a near dead-heat at the finish. Weiland narrowly bested Blair for first overall.

The Norfolk XC Series is a part of the Norfolk Race Series. The series continues with a time trial on July 14 starting at 7PM at Norfolk Beverage. Currenlty, Devin Bethune leads the series in Category A, while Matt Classen heads up the Category B field.
